Learning OBS can look complicated when you first open it. It isn’t. This guide walks you through the parts creators actually need to present, stream and record better.
If you’ve opened OBS Studio, looked at all the panels, buttons and settings and quietly thought, What on earth am I supposed to do with this? — you’re in the right place.
I use OBS because it gives me control.
Control over my camera.
Control over my microphone.
Control over what people see when I present, teach, record a video or go live.
And once you have a sensible setup, you don’t need to rebuild everything every time you want to create something.
That’s really the point of this guide.
I’m not going to try to turn you into a broadcast engineer. I’m going to show you the parts of OBS that are useful if you’re a course creator, coach, trainer, membership owner or digital business owner who wants to look and sound better online.

OBS Studio is software that lets you combine video, audio, screen sharing, images and other media into one presentation or recording.
Instead of simply sending your webcam straight into Zoom, for example, you can send your camera into OBS first.
OBS becomes your control room.
You can then decide what happens before the finished video reaches Zoom, YouTube, Facebook or another platform.
A simple setup might look like this:
Camera → OBS → Zoom
Your audio can work in a similar way:
Microphone → OBS → Virtual Audio Cable → Zoom
Once you understand those two routes, OBS starts to make much more sense.
For creators, the useful part of OBS isn’t simply live streaming.
You can use it to:

The more content you create, the more useful a repeatable system becomes.
I’m always looking for ways to remove unnecessary work. OBS is very good at that once you have it set up properly.
The mistake I see people make is trying to understand everything inside OBS at once.
Don't.
There are settings in OBS that you may never use.
Start with the pieces you actually need.
For this workflow, that means learning:
Work through those in order and OBS stops looking like a wall of technical controls.
It becomes a set of tools you recognise.
Your first job is simply to get OBS working.
That means installing OBS Studio, connecting a camera and creating a basic camera scene.
For the workshop setup, I use a 1920 × 1080 canvas. That's standard Full HD and works well for presentations, online teaching and normal landscape video.
You don't need to immediately push everything to 4K because your camera supports it.
Get HD working first.
Then improve things if there is a reason to.
I also recommend creating three basic scenes from the beginning:
They don't all need content immediately.
You’re simply giving your OBS setup some structure.
Your Main Camera scene contains your camera. Your Splash Screen can eventually hold an opening graphic. Your Screen Share scene is ready for when you start presenting your desktop or applications.

Start Virtual Camera
Turning on the OBS Virtual Camera allows software such as Zoom to treat your complete OBS output as a camera.
That means Zoom doesn't just see your webcam.
It sees whatever you decide to show in OBS.

Video is only half the job.
If your microphone goes directly into Zoom while your video goes through OBS, you don't have full control.
This is where a virtual audio cable comes in.
The virtual cable acts as a route between OBS and the software receiving your sound.
Your setup can become:
Microphone → OBS → Cable → Zoom
Why bother?
Because once the microphone is inside OBS, you can work on the audio before the audience hears it.
You can also play a video inside OBS and send its sound through the same route.
That becomes really useful during workshops.
You could switch to a video scene, play the video with its audio, switch back to yourself and continue talking without trying to manually share computer audio in the middle of the presentation.
The initial audio setup is probably one of the more technical parts of this process.
The good news is you normally only have to set it up properly once.

This sounds boring.
Do it anyway.
OBS often references the location of images, videos and other files rather than magically storing everything inside the application.
So imagine you've added a beautiful logo from your Downloads folder.
A few weeks later, you clean your Downloads folder.
Next time you open OBS, the logo is missing.
OBS isn't being difficult. You moved the file it was looking for.
The simple answer is to create a permanent home for your OBS assets.
You might create something like:
Documents → OBS Scenes → Project Name
Then keep your logos, splash screens, background images, video clips, masks, animations and sound files inside the project folder.
A little organisation now saves a ridiculous amount of head scratching later.

This is probably the most important OBS concept to understand.
A scene is a complete view.
A source is something contained inside that view.
Your Main Camera scene might contain your camera, microphone, logo and background graphic.
Your Screen Share scene could contain your shared monitor, microphone, a smaller version of your camera and a graphic frame.
Your Splash Screen could simply contain one image.
Once you see OBS this way, the interface becomes much easier.
You're building screens.
Then you're switching between those screens.

This is where your setup starts looking like your setup.
You can add image sources for logos, name graphics, workshop branding, frames, banners and transparent overlays.
Transparent PNG images are particularly useful because you can place them over your camera without a solid box around them.
You also need to understand stack order.
Think of the Sources panel as layers.
Whatever sits higher in the stack can appear in front of the things below it.
You can also group related sources together to keep larger scenes organised.

You don't have to screen share a video player every time you want to show a clip.
Bring the video into OBS as media.
This gives you much more control during a presentation.
OBS can loop video, restart it each time a source becomes active, or allow you to pause and continue depending on how you configure the media.
If your video has audio, remember that it needs to follow the correct OBS audio route if your audience is going to hear it.

Do you need a green screen to use OBS?
No.
A clean real background can often look much better than a badly processed virtual background.
But a properly lit green screen gives OBS a consistent colour to remove using a chroma key.
Once you've removed the green, you can position yourself over static backgrounds, animated backgrounds, presentation graphics, video and virtual sets.
It also gives you far more control over layering.

Screen sharing is one of the main reasons educators and course creators can get so much value from OBS.
You can capture an entire display or a specific application window.
I personally prefer working with multiple monitors and capturing an entire display.
It gives you room to keep OBS and your controls separate from the content your audience sees.
You can also put your camera over the shared screen.
If you're not using a green screen, masks can create the familiar circular camera effect.

OBS isn't only for going live.
It is also a useful recording tool.
Once your scenes are prepared, you can record a complete presentation directly to your computer while switching between your camera, screen demonstrations, videos and other scenes.

Once your microphone is routed through OBS, you can process the audio before it reaches your audience.
OBS includes controls such as gain, compression, noise suppression and noise gates.
You don't need to become an audio engineer.
Make small changes.
Record a test.
Listen to it.

Once your scenes and audio are working, OBS can also handle live streaming.
You prepare your presentation in OBS and then connect OBS to the destination platform.
That may involve connecting an account directly or using a streaming server and stream key.
The exact platform interface can change.

OBS profiles and duplicated scene setups let you build different workflows for different formats.
For short-form content, this can reduce the amount of editing you need later.
You're not trying to work like a machine.
You're creating a system.

Once everything is configured, a typical workshop can be as simple as:
Splash Screen → Main Camera → Screen Share → Video → Main Camera → Outro
Your microphone is already routed.
Your graphics are already positioned.
Your videos are loaded.
Your screen-sharing scene is ready.
You're not trying to build the presentation while everybody watches.
That's where OBS earns its place.
You don't need a television studio.
But hardware does matter.
OBS may be processing video, audio, background removal, recording and streaming at the same time.
Don't solve that by immediately turning every quality setting to maximum.
Start simple.
A normal HD workflow is enough for many creators.
A second monitor is one upgrade I find particularly useful because it gives you room to separate your controls from your presentation.

Start with your real background if that's what you have.
Make it clean.
Frame yourself properly.
Get your lighting reasonable.
Add your logo if you want.
Then decide whether a green screen would genuinely improve what you're creating.
